Bolivia declares national emergency after 50-day blockade

The move allows troops and police to be deployed as blockades trigger shortages of food, fuel and medical supplies.

Bolivia President Rodrigo Paz declared a national state of emergency after anti-government protests and road blockades spread for about 50 days. The move came as the country's political and economic crisis deepened, with demonstrators backed by labor unions, farm groups and supporters of former president Evo Morales demanding that Paz step down. Blockades across several regions have disrupted the distribution of essential goods, slowed economic activity and raised concerns that the humanitarian situation could worsen. According to the Bolivia Ombudsman Office, shortages of food, fuel and medical supplies have been reported in several areas, while at least 14 people died between May 1 and June 15 in connection with the unrest. The emergency declaration opens the way for the military and police to be deployed to restore road access and order.
