Binance hack tops $6.3 billion, sending bitcoin below $77,000

What's new: Binance froze about $3 billion and expects withdrawals to resume by Sunday after the biggest crypto theft on record.

Binance halted withdrawals Friday after hackers stole about $6.3 billion in digital assets in what blockchain analysis firms described as the largest crypto theft on record. The exchange said roughly $3 billion had been frozen on blockchain networks and pledged to cover all losses with company funds. Bitcoin fell below $77,000 for the first time in more than a month before trimming losses, while BNB also dropped. TRM Labs, Chainalysis and Elliptic pointed to North Korea as the likely culprit, though no group claimed responsibility. The breach hit the world’s biggest crypto exchange, which holds about $135.2 billion in assets, and renewed concerns about security across the digital-asset industry.
