Berkshire lifts Alphabet stake 83%, making it No. 3 holding

What's new: Berkshire became a net stock buyer after 14 straight quarters of sales, while its cash pile fell to $365.5 billion.

Berkshire Hathaway sharply increased its Alphabet stake in the second quarter, raising the Google parent into its third-largest U.S.-listed equity holding behind Apple and American Express. A regulatory filing released Friday showed Berkshire owned about 106 million Alphabet shares worth $37.9 billion at the end of June, up 83% from the prior quarter. The move largely reflected a $10 billion private stock purchase disclosed in early June as Alphabet sought funding for AI infrastructure. Berkshire, now led by CEO Greg Abel with Warren Buffett as chairman, also added to Delta Air Lines and homebuilder bets including Lennar, and opened a small position in D.R. Horton. The conglomerate posted nearly $20 billion in net stock purchases for the quarter and completed its acquisition of Taylor Morrison.
