BEM UI backs rector's appeal in Bahlil promoter case
New: 301 UI professors have filed an amicus curiae with the Supreme Court, saying the ruling threatens academic autonomy.
BEM Universitas Indonesia said it supports the rector’s move to file a cassation appeal to the Supreme Court over a PTUN ruling that annulled the ethical sanctions against the promoter and co-promoter of Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia's doctoral dissertation. In an amicus curiae submission at the Salemba Campus on Thursday, June 4, 2026, BEM UI Chairman Yatalathof Ma’shum Imawan urged the academic community to close ranks to protect academic integrity and campus autonomy. Earlier, the UI Council of Professors found four violations in Bahlil’s doctoral study process, including allegations of dishonesty in data collection, an unusually fast graduation, and a conflict of interest involving Chandra Wijaya and Athor Subroto. The PTUN then ordered UI to revoke the rector’s decision and rehabilitate both names. In May 2026, 301 UI professors also submitted an amicus curiae to the Supreme Court.
