BC Conservatives win 64 seats, ending New Democrats' 9-year rule

Why it matters: The party pledged to expand LNG output, scrap emissions limits and replace British Columbia's carbon-tax framework.

British Columbia's opposition Conservatives captured 64 of 93 seats in a provincial election, ending nine years of New Democratic rule and securing the party's first provincial victory since 1928. Provisional results showed the New Democrats won 27 seats. Conservative leader Lorne Doerkson, set to become premier, campaigned on cutting regulation and sharply expanding the province's energy sector. The party pledged to double natural gas production by 2032 and more than triple it by 2035, while ending emissions limits and overhauling the carbon-tax framework. Voters had also focused on cost-of-living pressures, healthcare and the trade war with US President Donald Trump.
