Flash floods in Nuristan, Afghanistan, kill 20
More than 100 people remain missing, including Parun’s mayor, as search operations continue in the heavily damaged city.
Flash floods triggered by monsoon rains struck Afghanistan’s eastern Nuristan Province on Monday (20/7), killing at least 20 people. Afghanistan’s disaster authorities reported more than 80 people injured and more than 100 still missing. Parun, the capital of Nuristan, was the hardest hit area. Homes, shops, hotels and market areas were heavily damaged after torrents swept through the city on the banks of the Parun River. Nuristan provincial governor spokesman Feraidon Samim said the mayor of Parun was among 105 people whose whereabouts were unknown. Search and rescue operations are still under way, but residents are also looking for victims amid the debris without adequate equipment.
