Bangladesh President Shahabuddin resigns, citing worsening health

Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned on Friday, stepping down from the largely ceremonial post before his term was due to end in 2028. In a resignation letter to the speaker of parliament, Shahabuddin wrote that worsening physical and mental incapacity had left him unable to carry out the duties of the office and that he needed long-term medical treatment. Antara, citing Bangladeshi media, reported he had recently been diagnosed with autonomic neuropathy that sometimes causes him to lose consciousness. The 76-year-old was elected in 2023 with backing from Sheikh Hasina's Awami League. Pressure on him had grown since Hasina was ousted in a student revolt in 2024.
