August 12 solar eclipse crosses Europe and North Atlantic
The totality path crossed Greenland, Iceland, Spain and northeast Portugal, while many European cities saw only a partial eclipse.
The solar eclipse on Wednesday, August 12, was visible across much of Europe and the North Atlantic, with totality seen along parts of a path crossing Greenland, Iceland, Spain and a small part of northeast Portugal. Outside that path, residents in Paris, London, Berlin, Prague, Ladispoli in Italy, and Zadar in Croatia watched a partial eclipse. Photos published by media showed darkened skies at several points, including Guadalajara and Galicia in Spain and the area around the Zeiss Grand Planetarium in Berlin. According to the European Space Agency, the phenomenon occurs when the Sun, Moon and Earth line up, with the total phase lasting only briefly but serving as the peak of the observation.
