Asian stocks slip as AI funding fears offset oil-led relief
What's new: Brent fell 1.8%, S&P 500 futures rose 0.8% and Jakarta sank 5% after MSCI flagged a possible Indonesia downgrade.
Asian share markets mostly fell Monday as worries over the huge capital needed for artificial intelligence projects weighed on tech sentiment before a heavy week of earnings. MSCI’s broadest Asia-Pacific share index outside Japan slipped 0.2%, Japan’s Nikkei lost 0.7% and Taiwan fell 1.1%, while South Korea rose 0.6%. A drop in oil prices after the Trump administration moved toward waiving some Russia sanctions helped limit the damage, lifting Wall Street futures and supporting bonds. Brent crude fell 1.8% to $107.83 a barrel, while 10-year Treasury yields eased to 5.0525%. Jakarta’s benchmark tumbled 5% after MSCI said it was considering moving Indonesia from emerging-market status to standalone.
