The Army identified Sgt. Michael Emmanuel Swinton, 30, of North Carolina as the U.S. soldier killed during an operation involving a downed Iranian drone at Erbil Air Base in Iraq. Military officials said Swinton died Sunday during a controlled detonation of the one-way attack drone, and the circumstances remain under investigation. Another service member was injured and received medical treatment. Swinton was assigned to D Battery, 2nd Battalion, 55th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, 108th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, based at Fort Bragg. His death came as fighting between the United States and Iran stretched into a second week and followed the killing of two other U.S. soldiers in Jordan.
