Appeals court lets E. Jean Carroll collect $5.8 million from Trump

What's next: Trump can still ask the Supreme Court to block the payout, but the money can be released now with interest.

A federal appeals court in New York denied President Donald Trump's bid to stop E. Jean Carroll from collecting nearly $5.8 million tied to a 2023 civil verdict that found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming her. The ruling came hours after U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan ordered the release of funds Trump had deposited with the court to cover the $5 million judgment. The Supreme Court had declined on June 29 to hear Trump's appeal of that verdict, making the judgment final. Carroll said Trump assaulted her in a Manhattan department store dressing room in 1996. A separate $83.3 million defamation judgment in Carroll's favor has been upheld on appeal, but enforcement of that award remains paused.
