Angie Nixon upsets Alex Vindman in Florida Senate primary

What's next: Nixon will face Republican Sen. Ashley Moody in November for the final two years of Marco Rubio's old seat.

Florida state Rep. Angie Nixon won the Democratic primary for a US Senate seat in a major upset, beating retired Army Lt. Col. Alex Vindman despite his stronger fundraising and national profile. Nixon, a Jacksonville lawmaker first elected in 2020, advances to the November election to decide who will serve the final two years of former Sen. Marco Rubio's term. Republican Sen. Ashley Moody now holds the seat after Gov. Ron DeSantis appointed her when Rubio left to join the Trump administration. The result extended a strong night for anti-establishment candidates in Florida and dealt another setback to candidates backed by President Donald Trump in other primaries.
