Anak Krakatau activity rises, people barred from 2-km crater zone
24-hour monitoring recorded 35 gas-puff quakes, 20 low-frequency quakes and 33 hybrid quakes in one day.
Volcanic activity at Mount Anak Krakatau in the waters of the Sunda Strait, South Lampung, has increased in recent days. The Anak Krakatau Volcano Observation Post in Hargopancuran urged coastal residents, fishermen and tourists to stay alert and avoid activity within a two-kilometer radius of the crater because the volcano remains at Level II, or Alert. Observation post chief Suwarno said visual and seismic monitoring is carried out 24 hours a day to detect changes in activity and guide mitigation. Data on magma.esdm.go.id for 24-hour observations as of June 23 recorded 35 gas-puff quakes, 20 low-frequency quakes, 33 hybrid or multiphase quakes and one continuous tremor. Visually, white crater smoke was seen rising 10 to 200 meters from the summit.
