America250 readies 900-pound time capsule for July 4 burial
What's inside: Nearly 200 items, including a Constitution signed by the justices, will be buried in Philadelphia and reopened in 2276.
America250 is preparing to bury a 900-pound stainless steel time capsule in Philadelphia on July 4, 2026, as part of the nation’s 250th birthday observance. The waterproof vessel, capped with an 1,100-pound lid and weighing about a ton once sealed, will be placed at Independence National Historical Park and is meant to be opened in 2276. Organizers said the capsule holds nearly 200 items drawn from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and the five US territories, along with contributions from the three branches of government and everyday Americans. Among the artifacts are a pocket Constitution signed by Supreme Court justices, a crystal from the 2026 Times Square New Year’s Eve ball, an American flag flown at the 2026 Rose Parade and an NFL America250 commemorative coin.
