Altman heads to Washington as US AI framework nears Aug. 1 deadline

What's next: Federal agencies have until Friday to turn Trump's June AI order into a working review system for new models.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is meeting White House chief of staff Susie Wiles and other Trump administration officials in Washington this week as the government races to finish an artificial intelligence framework by Aug. 1. Altman told CNBC he has seen the proposed plan, which is meant to carry out President Donald Trump's June executive order on AI. That order asked companies to voluntarily provide models to the government for capability reviews before full release, but left the mechanics to federal agencies. Altman also met Sen. Ted Cruz and several Senate Democrats, while Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang is on Capitol Hill for separate talks on open models and US competitiveness.
