Alito stays on court through June as Senate shift clouds vacancies

Why it matters: With Democrats set to control the Senate, any Supreme Court opening could be far harder for Trump to fill.

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito told Fox News he does not plan to retire and is committed to serving through at least the current term, which ends in late June. The comment came as Republicans weighed the impact of Democrats taking firm control of the Senate after the midterms. Alito, 76, is the court’s second-oldest justice after Clarence Thomas, 78. Conservative legal commentator Ed Whelan argued the new Senate math would make it extremely difficult for President Donald Trump to confirm any future Supreme Court nominee during the final two years of his term.
