Algeria rallies past Jordan 2-1 to stay alive in World Cup Group J
What’s next: Algeria must beat Austria in its final group match to be sure of a knockout-round berth, while Jordan is eliminated.
Algeria came from behind to beat Jordan 2-1 in Santa Clara on Monday, preserving its chance to reach the World Cup knockout stage from Group J. Jordan struck first in the 36th minute when Nizar Al-Rashdan scored his country’s first lead in a World Cup match. Algeria controlled the second half and broke through when substitute Nadhir Benbouali equalized in the 69th minute. Amine Gouiri then scored the winner in the 82nd after a goalmouth scramble. The result leaves Algeria needing a victory over Austria in its last group game to move into second place behind Argentina, which has already secured the top spot. Jordan will finish its tournament against the defending champions.
