Airlangga targets 20% of 1,800 tons of public gold for bullion
The government estimates “under-the-mattress” gold is worth US$252 billion, while gold banks now manage 153 tons.
Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto is targeting 20 percent of the 1,800 tons of gold owned by the public and kept outside the financial system to enter the bullion ecosystem. At the inauguration of the Indonesia Bullion Market Association (IBMA) in Jakarta on Aug. 20, 2026, Airlangga estimated the “under-the-mattress” gold reserves were worth about US$252 billion. He said the move would turn idle gold into a productive asset in the financial system. A day later at the SUAR Forum 2026 in BSD City, Tangerang, Airlangga said gold banks that have operated for about a year had managed 153 tons of gold worth about Rp360 trillion, or US$20 billion. IBMA now has 11 members, including pegadaian, bank-syariah-indonesia, hartadinata-abadi, amman-mineral-internasional, and icdx-group.
