After Nov. 3 rout, Democrats open a crowded 2028 White House race

Why it matters: The party's big midterm wins did not settle its core fight over whether to move to the center or further left.

Democrats are moving quickly into what strategists expect to be a wide-open 2028 presidential primary after sweeping the Nov. 3 midterms and dealing a sharp setback to President Donald Trump’s agenda. No clear front-runner has emerged, and the party still faces a fundamental argument over how to regain the White House: lean toward the center or press a more progressive agenda on health care, taxes, policing and foreign policy. On the Republican side, Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio are among the names seen as possible successors to Trump, who cannot seek a third term. In Michigan, Democrat Abdul El-Sayed’s Senate win over Mike Rogers added another prominent progressive voice to the mix.
