Erosion hits Kuala Selat, 500 hectares of mangroves readied

Since 2021, erosion has damaged about 1,700 hectares of local farms, and rehabilitation could expand to 1,000 hectares.

Erosion in Kuala Selat village, Kateman district, Indragiri Hilir regency, Riau, has prompted coastal rehabilitation efforts through the planting of mangroves on 500 hectares. The program is being prepared by the government together with Polda Riau and could be expanded to as much as 1,000 hectares. Coastal damage in the area has reportedly affected about 1,700 hectares of community plantations since 2021. In addition to planting, the recovery plan includes mangrove nurseries and maintenance for three years, with local residents involved. During a visit by Ekspedisi Merah Putih Presisi on Saturday, food aid, ketinting boats and matching grants were also handed over to 13 community groups supported by PPIU M4CR Riau.
