About 80 activists, including US candidate Brad Lander, detained in West Bank
What's new: Rights groups called it the largest mass detention of activists in the occupied West Bank in at least a decade.
Israeli security forces detained about 80 American and Israeli activists, including New York Democratic congressional nominee Brad Lander, after declaring an olive grove in the occupied West Bank a closed military zone. The group had joined Palestinian farmers harvesting olives near Nahalin, close to the settlement of Beitar Illit. Rabbis for Human Rights said Lander was later released, while others were held at a police station in an Israeli settlement. NPR reported Israeli lawyers described the sweep as the biggest mass detention of activists in the West Bank in at least 10 years. The military and police did not immediately explain the detentions.
