Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Senate primary, will face Mike Rogers

Why it matters: The result hands Democrats a high-stakes test in a swing state central to their bid to retake the Senate.

Abdul El-Sayed narrowly won Michigan’s Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate after overnight vote counting, defeating Rep. Haley Stevens in a contest that exposed the party’s split between progressives and centrists. El-Sayed, a former Detroit and Wayne County health official backed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, will face former Rep. Mike Rogers in November for the seat being vacated by Sen. Gary Peters. Stevens had support from more establishment Democrats and benefited from heavier outside spending. The race in the battleground state is expected to be one of the key Senate contests of the midterms, with Democrats needing to hold Michigan as they try to regain control of the chamber.
