Abdul El-Sayed Wins Michigan Senate Primary by Narrow Margin

Abdul El-Sayed won the Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate seat in Michigan after edging Haley Stevens by a very narrow margin. Vote totals cited by the Associated Press showed El-Sayed with about 48.5% of the vote, ahead by 14,893 votes out of more than 1.5 million ballots counted. The victory by the former Wayne County health official shook the Democratic establishment, which backed Stevens and was supported by heavy political spending from AIPAC. El-Sayed was boosted by progressive figures including Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In the November midterm election, he will face Republican candidate Mike Rogers in a key contest in a battleground state.
