Abdul El-Sayed edges Haley Stevens in Michigan Senate primary

Abdul El-Sayed won Michigan’s Democratic primary for the U.S. Senate, narrowly defeating Rep. Haley Stevens in a high-cost race that exposed a split between the party’s progressive wing and its establishment. With more than 1.5 million ballots counted, fewer than 15,000 votes separated the candidates, or just under 1 percentage point. El-Sayed, a former Michigan public health official backed by Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, ran on Medicare for All, lower drug costs and campaign finance reform. Stevens had support from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, outgoing Sen. Gary Peters and well-funded outside groups. El-Sayed will face former Republican congressman Mike Rogers in November in a battleground-state contest with implications for control of the Senate.
