Aaron Ford unseats Joe Lombardo in Nevada governor's race
Why it matters: The win flips Nevada's governorship to Democrats and makes Ford the first Black governor west of the Mississippi.
Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford defeated Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo in one of the country's most closely watched governor's races, according to an Associated Press call cited by NPR and Fox News. The result flips the governorship to Democrats after Lombardo's 2022 victory and could give the party unified control of state government, with Democrats already holding legislative majorities. Ford campaigned on affordability, housing, education, health care and abortion access, while criticizing Lombardo over high living costs and ties to President Donald Trump. Lombardo ran on his first-term record on public safety, education funding and economic development.
