Supreme Court limits federal gun ban for marijuana users

What's new: The 9-0 ruling leaves other firearm limits intact, including bans for addicts, intoxicated people and those deemed dangerous.

The Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that a federal law barring unlawful drug users from having guns cannot be applied to a Texas man who used marijuana and kept a pistol at home, marking another expansion of Second Amendment protections. The unanimous decision backed Ali Danial Hemani, who was prosecuted under a 1968 law after admitting he used marijuana every other day while owning a Glock 9mm. Justice Neil Gorsuch wrote that unlawful drug use by itself was not enough in this case to strip someone of gun rights. The court said its ruling was narrow and did not disturb bans covering drug addicts, people who are presently intoxicated, or those found to be a danger to themselves or others.
