70-year-old man dies after early-morning fire at MacPherson HDB block

A 70-year-old man died after a fire broke out in a ninth-floor HDB flat in MacPherson early July 28, authorities said. The Singapore Civil Defence Force and police were alerted at about 2.05 a.m. to the blaze at Block 39 Circuit Road. Firefighters arrived to find black smoke pouring from the living room, forced their way into the unit and put out the fire. They found the man unresponsive in the living room, carried him out and started CPR before he was taken unconscious to Changi General Hospital. He later died there. About 80 residents from the block were evacuated as a precaution. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
