7 U.S. senators urge Trump to cancel Russian diesel imports
They say the move would breach the 2022 ban on Russian energy imports and create new revenue for Moscow.
Seven U.S. senators from the Republican and Democratic parties urged President Donald Trump to cancel a Russian diesel import deal announced on Oct. 9. In a joint statement on Oct. 11, they said the policy conflicts with U.S. law banning imports of Russian energy since the 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Signatories included Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski, Thom Tillis, John Curtis, Jeanne Shaheen, Richard Blumenthal, and Ron Wyden. Trump previously said Vladimir Putin agreed to release 300,000 tons of diesel to the U.S. and global markets, followed by 500,000 tons in November, 1 million tons after that, and an additional 3 million tons. The U.S. Treasury also suspended sanctions on Russian diesel exports until April 7. Volodymyr Zelensky called the deal a gift for Putin.
