7 defendants in MT Federal II blast in Batam face 1-2.5 years

Prosecutors said the defendants' negligence killed 14 workers and injured 16 others; all remain in custody.

The Public Prosecutor sought prison terms of 1 year to 2 years 6 months for seven defendants in the MT Federal II ship blast case at PT ASL Shipyard Indonesia in Tanjung Uncang, Batam. The sentencing hearing was held at the Batam District Court on Thursday, Aug. 6. Prosecutors said all of the defendants were proven to have jointly acted with negligence that caused the death of another person. The blast killed 14 workers, seriously injured 9, and left 7 others with minor injuries. Kim Dong Gyun, commercial manager of PT ASL Shipyard Indonesia, was sought for 1 year 6 months. The six other defendants, including Neo Ah Chye, Abdullah bin Ismail, Dranreb Ray Adino Dimayacyac, and three PT ASL HSE officers, each faced a demand of 2 years 6 months in prison.
