7.3 quake off Chiapas triggers tsunami warning, shakes 3 countries

What's new: Mexico deployed security and civil protection personnel, while officials reported no deaths or major damage so far.

A magnitude 7.3 earthquake struck off Mexico's Chiapas coast on Friday, prompting a tsunami warning and strong tremors across Guatemala and El Salvador. The US Geological Survey put the quake at a depth of about 15 kilometers, with the epicenter near Puerto Madero and southwest of Aquiles Serdan. Mexico said it had no immediate reports of deaths or major damage, but sent security and civil protection personnel into affected areas and carried out preventive evacuations at some sites. The US Tsunami Warning System said waves of 0.3 to 1 meter above tide level were possible along parts of the Mexico and Guatemala coasts. Aftershocks, including one measured at 5.2, were also felt in the region.
