7.1 Kumamoto quake kills 13, leaves 3 in mall ruins
Three Aeon Mall workers remain missing, while 4,500 troops have been deployed for search and recovery operations.
A magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Kumamoto in southern Japan on Tuesday killed at least 13 people, left five others in cardiac arrest, and damaged roads, bridges and buildings across the region. At Aeon Mall Kumamoto in Kashima, eight people were pulled from the rubble of a collapsed building about an hour after the quake; three of them later died. Mall operator Aeon said three other workers remain unaccounted for after a head count of about 2,700 staff. Authorities are investigating a possible gas explosion at the mall. NHK also reported five deaths at the Nippon Paper Industries plant after a chimney collapsed. About 260,000 residents were told to go to evacuation centers, and more than 4,500 personnel were deployed for emergency response.
