Florida sues OpenAI, seeks personal liability for Sam Altman
What's new: The suit claims ChatGPT hid safety risks, harmed minors and aided violence, making Florida the first state to sue OpenAI.
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier filed a civil lawsuit Monday against OpenAI and Chief Executive Sam Altman, accusing the company of releasing ChatGPT while concealing serious safety risks. The complaint alleges the chatbot contributed to violence and self-harm, addicted minors and weakened users' critical thinking, while OpenAI pushed the product to millions of people. Florida is seeking to hold Altman personally liable and force the company to comply with the state's deceptive and unfair trade practices law. Uthmeier said a separate criminal investigation tied to the 2025 Florida State University mass shooting remains open. OpenAI said it has industry-leading protections and policies, including tools aimed at protecting minors.
