5 die in Ohio river after group tries to save struggling swimmer

What’s new: Two children under 10 were left behind and placed with family services after the deaths near Powell.

Five people died after a cascading rescue attempt along the Scioto River near Powell, Ohio, turned deadly, authorities said Monday. The group had gathered Sunday evening near the O'Shaughnessy Reservoir when one adult went into the water to swim and began struggling. Two other adults entered the river to help, then two more followed as they also ran into trouble, Delaware County Sheriff Jeffrey Balzer said. A child from the group ran to a nearby road around 9 p.m. and flagged down a motorist, prompting a 911 call. Rescue crews recovered two women Sunday night and found three men in the river Monday. Two children under age 10 were placed in the care of family services.
