4-year-old child in Bekasi dies after abuse by stepmother
Authorities have detained the suspect, and child protection law could carry up to 15 years in prison plus one-third.
A 4-year-old child in Kabupaten Bekasi, Jawa Barat, died after allegedly being abused by a stepmother. The Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection called the case a stark warning about child protection in the home. Based on information received by the ministry, the violence was allegedly triggered by the suspect’s jealousy of the victim’s grandmother, who was seen as caring more for the child than for the grandchild from her marriage to the victim’s father. UPTD PPA Kabupaten Bekasi and Polres Metro Bekasi have secured the suspect and had taken the victim for intensive treatment before the child later died. Minister PPPA Arifah Fauzi said the ministry will monitor the legal process. The suspect is charged under Article 76C in conjunction with Article 80 paragraphs (3) and (4) of Law No. 35 of 2014 on Child Protection.
