4 missing people found dead in Jeju, police officer arrested
Investigators are reviewing up to 298 missing-person cases handled by the officer after allegations he falsely closed reports.
Four people who were initially reported missing were found dead on Jeju Island over the past three days, triggering a major investigation into allegations that a police sergeant surnamed Bu mishandled missing-person cases. One victim was Jang Mi-ran, 37, who was found on Monday after going missing in May. Police suspect Bu closed Jang's report without confirming her whereabouts, then gave false information to her family. A man in his 60s who had been missing since late June was also found dead after his family had previously been told he was safe. The Jeju District Court has issued an arrest warrant for Bu. Amid public criticism, police are reviewing hundreds of missing-person reports he handled, while President Lee Jae Myung has ordered an overhaul of the police.
