2 hospitalized, 28 evacuated after Yishun HDB flat fire

What's new: Preliminary findings point to an electrical cause in a fifth-floor bedroom, and flames also damaged the unit above.

Two people were taken to hospital and 28 residents were evacuated after a fire broke out in a fifth-floor HDB flat in Yishun on June 18. The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it was alerted to the blaze at Block 844 Yishun Street 81 at about 11.50 a.m. Firefighters forced their way into the unit and put out the bedroom fire with two water jets. The living room also suffered burn damage, and an air-conditioning compressor in the sixth-floor unit caught fire before crews extinguished it. One person was taken to Singapore General Hospital for smoke inhalation, while another was taken to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital for chest discomfort. Preliminary findings indicate the fire likely started from an electrical source.
