2 die as wildfires tear across Greek island of Salamina

What's new: About 90 people were evacuated by sea as nearly 200 firefighters tried to stop two blazes from merging.

Two people died and hundreds were forced to leave parts of Salamina, a Greek island west of Athens, after two wildfires broke out almost at the same time on Sunday. Authorities recovered two bodies from the Peristeria beach area, while several others were injured and at least five to nine people received medical treatment, according to local media and wire reports. About 90 people were evacuated by sea as coast guard boats and other vessels moved residents and beachgoers from threatened coastal areas. Nearly 200 firefighters, dozens of engines, aircraft and helicopters were deployed as strong winds pushed the flames through pine forest and brush and threatened inhabited areas.
