13 Maine Democrats vie to replace Platner before July 25 vote
Why it matters: The party’s pick will challenge Sen. Susan Collins in a race that could help decide Senate control.
Maine Democrats are scrambling to replace former Senate nominee Graham Platner, with 13 candidates filing to compete ahead of a July 25 state party convention. Eight contenders appeared at a Thursday forum and tried to balance their own campaigns with parts of Platner’s message. Jordan Wood pointed to Platner’s stance on Gaza, while Troy Jackson cited his attacks on the health care and prescription drug industries. David Costello also referenced Platner during the event. The nominee chosen at the convention will face Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the midterm election in one of the races that could shape the GOP’s narrow Senate majority.
