Australia seizes 2.7 tons of cocaine in record Sydney bust

What's new: Police tied the shipment to a vessel detained in Solomon Islands and said eight people have now been charged.

Australian police seized 2.7 metric tons of cocaine hidden in underground bunkers beneath shipping containers on a property in Londonderry, on Sydney's western outskirts, in the country's biggest cocaine bust on record. Authorities estimate the haul was worth A$816 million and say it was brought ashore by boat at Midge Point in Queensland before being driven about 1,800 kilometers to Sydney. Two men, 21 and 25, were arrested at the property and charged with possessing a commercial quantity of an unlawfully imported border-controlled drug. Investigators linked the case to Operation Minjiang and said a suspected mother ship, the Belize-flagged MV Wealth, has been detained in Solomon Islands.
