Zamboanga school shooting kills 2 students
Police said the gunman was a 9th-grade student who carried a pistol and rifle, then killed himself after firing into a classroom.
A shooting at a school under Ateneo de Zamboanga University in Zamboanga City, southern Philippines, killed two students on Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026. The dead were a male student and the gunman, whom police initially identified as a 9th-grade student. He entered the campus carrying a pistol and rifle, then opened fire at students inside a classroom before killing himself. Zamboanga Mayor Khymer Adan Olaso said the gunman used a high-powered firearm. University president Ernald Andal said there was no longer an active shooter and no additional fatalities. Authorities continued to secure the school area, while parents picked up their children from the campus.
