Yusril urges Polri to stop vigilantism after fatal cases
The government is preparing a cross-ministry coordination meeting after cases in Bali and Morowali left suspected offenders dead.
Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration and Corrections Yusril Ihza Mahendra urged Polri to strengthen security to prevent vigilantism that has recently emerged in several regions. He pointed to cases in Bali and Morowali, Central Sulawesi, where suspected chicken and motorcycle thieves died after being beaten by a mob. Yusril said allowing such incidents to go unchecked could fuel new crimes and lead to serious human rights violations. Polda Metro Jaya also reminded residents that they may only detain someone caught in the act and must immediately hand the person over to police, not punish them themselves. The government will hold a joint coordination meeting with Kemenko Polkam and involve Komnas HAM, LPSK, Komnas Perempuan, and KPAI.
