Xi presses global AI rules as China forms 29-nation group

What's new: The Shanghai-based body aims to coordinate AI governance as China pushes back on security-based tech curbs.

Chinese President Xi Jinping used the World Artificial Intelligence Conference in Shanghai on Friday to push for global cooperation on AI and argue that the technology should not be controlled by any one country. Xi called for laws, monitoring, early-warning systems and emergency responses to keep AI "under human control" as concerns grow over military, cyber and economic risks. The speech came a day after representatives from 29 countries, including Russia, Pakistan and Indonesia, signed an agreement to set up the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization in Shanghai. The new intergovernmental group is meant to promote consultation and collaboration on AI development and governance.
