Chinese President Xi Jinping opened a closely watched Communist Party plenum in Beijing on Monday, gathering roughly 300 Central Committee members ahead of a major party congress next year where he is widely expected to secure a fourth term. State media said Xi presented a draft decision on strengthening strict party self-governance, with the meeting focused on discipline, corruption and cadre loyalty. The four-day session comes after years of purges that have left eight Central Committee seats vacant and 15 members under investigation. The military is also in focus after five of seven Central Military Commission members were toppled in Xi's anti-corruption campaign.
