Wrestling Cut From SEA Games 2027, PGSI Seeks Replacement

Indonesia loses a medal chance, while wrestlers continue training camps without an official regional event.

The executive board of Persatuan Gulat Seluruh Indonesia has accepted host Malaysia's decision not to include wrestling in the 2027 SEA Games. PGSI secretary general Gusti Randa said the federation respects the authority of Malaysia's NOC to determine which sports will be contested and will not file a protest. However, the removal is seen as hurting athletes' morale and reducing Indonesia's medal chances. At the 2025 Thailand SEA Games, Indonesian wrestling won one gold, five silver and two bronze, while in the previous two editions the sport produced six gold, six silver and two bronze. PGSI now hopes the Southeast Asian Wrestling Federation, together with United World Wrestling, will organize an open tournament in 2027 so athletes still have a regional benchmark.
