White House targets Moonshot over Anthropic AI theft claims

A senior White House technology official accused Chinese startup Moonshot AI of covertly copying Anthropic’s advanced Fable model to build its Kimi K3 system, escalating a US crackdown on alleged AI intellectual-property theft. Michael Kratsios, who leads the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, said Moonshot used large-scale “distillation” and built internal tools to shift access methods and avoid detection. He also alleged Moonshot obtained or accessed Nvidia GB300-equipped servers, including in Thailand, despite US export controls on high-end chips to China. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said sanctions could be used against foreign firms that steal US technology. Moonshot had not publicly responded in the reports, and Kimi K3 is due for open-source release on July 27.
