Westchester ballot scanner glitch delays count in NY-17 race

What's next: Thousands of paper ballots will be moved under police escort to a secure warehouse for scanning under bipartisan oversight.

A programming glitch left vote-scanning machines unable to accept paper ballots across Westchester County when polls opened Tuesday, delaying the count in New York's competitive 17th Congressional District race. A judge allowed election officials to move thousands of ballots to a secure county warehouse, where they will be scanned and counted under the supervision of party representatives and election staff. The New York Board of Elections said the problem followed a software update made for one municipal contest after machines had already been prepared and tested. Westchester is the more Democratic-leaning part of the district, where Republican Rep. Mike Lawler is running against Democrat Cait Conley.
