Wales drops backing for Infantino in widening FIFA revolt

What's next: More federations could pull support before the March election after FIFA scrapped its private-investment plan.

Wales became the first home nation to withdraw support for Gianni Infantino’s re-election as FIFA president, deepening a backlash over his failed plan to sell stakes in FIFA competitions to private investors. The Football Association of Wales said Infantino had lost its confidence because of failures in governance, leadership and judgment. The Guardian reported that Serbia also publicly withdrew support, following Finland, while England’s Football Association and Sweden moved against his candidacy as pressure spread across UEFA. UEFA and Concacaf had already criticized FIFA’s leadership after the investment proposal was abandoned over the weekend.
