Vance defends Iran deal, rebukes Israeli hard-liners over security

Why it matters: The vice president framed the pact as serving US interests even if parts of Israel's political system oppose it.

Vice President JD Vance defended the new US-Iran memorandum on the Strait of Hormuz and Tehran's nuclear program, pushing back on Israeli critics who argue Washington is giving up too much. In an interview with New York Times columnist Ross Douthat posted Thursday, Vance said some Israelis were reacting to misinformation and warned that Israel could not "kill your way out of solving every single national security problem." He singled out criticism from Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich, while noting Benjamin Netanyahu had not publicly attacked the deal. Vance said the agreement would help the region and the world, but stressed the Trump administration would pursue what it sees as the interests of the American people where US and Israeli goals diverge.
