Utah prosecutors tie Charlie Kirk killing to suspect's political motive

Utah prosecutors argued in a July 28 court filing that Tyler Robinson targeted conservative activist Charlie Kirk because of Kirk’s political views, including his opposition to gay marriage and transgender rights. Robinson, 23, is accused of fatally shooting Kirk on Sept. 10, 2025, at Utah Valley University. Prosecutors pointed to messages after the shooting, including one in which Robinson allegedly wrote that he had had enough of Kirk’s “hatred,” and to words engraved on ammunition. Defense lawyer Richard Novak argued earlier that a letter from Turning Point USA board member David Engelhardt did not show Robinson’s state of mind. Judge Tony Graf is weighing whether evidence is sufficient to send the case to trial.
