US tariffs of up to 12.5% on 60 partners draw global pushback

The United States imposed new tariffs of 10% to 12.5% on imports from 60 trading partners on July 24, triggering objections from allies and major economies that rejected Washington's forced-labor rationale. The action by the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative uses Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 and covers 99.4% of American imports, replacing a temporary 10% global tariff that was due to expire after the Supreme Court ruled Trump's emergency-powers tariffs unlawful. Australia, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand and Japan called the measure unjustified or regrettable, while most signaled they would keep negotiating rather than retaliate. Brazil said the new 12.5% duty stacks on a separate 25% tariff imposed earlier this month.
